Turn Your Love Of Sports Into A Career!

Finding a career you love is important, and if sports are your passion, you have likely considered a career in sports management. Few people have the ability or luck to become professional athletes. Fortunately, a graduate degree in sports management can allow you to work with pro athletes and be directly involved with the world of sports, even if you don’t have what it takes to excel in sports yourself. A job in this profession can be the most fun you’ve had in your life!

If you’ve considered working in this field, you likely already have a great deal of technical knowledge about many sports. You are probably good at math and science. You should also have excellent leadership and management skills and enjoy working with people.

Most sports management jobs require an MBA or MS in Sports Management. Prior to getting your graduate degree in this discipline, you’ll need to have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in this field, business, or a similar field. Having a related internship is not only great experience, but it can help you get into a good MBA program.

More and more graduate programs in sports management are being launched, because this field is growing in popularity. Check out the details of each program that you are considering, making sure it emphasizes what you wish to learn. For example, some programs are committed to educating future executives and administrators, while others have tracks for students who wish to be coaches or trainers. You can even get into sports medicine or sports law.

In your program, you’ll learn graduate-level business theory while also exploring facets and topics of sports management. You’ll delve into financing, economics, marketing, and management as it applies to the athletic industry. Good programs also allow students to gain hands-on experience putting learned concepts into practice.

You’ll have a lot of options as a graduate of a Master’s program in sports management, depending on your area of concentration. You may become a marketing or administrative coordinator for a team, or work in public relations. You could be a manager for a pro team itself, or an agent representing individual athletes. You could also work as an athletic director for a private school or college. If you choose to be involved in the financial aspects of sports business, you could seek employment in sports economics or finances.

The graduate program you choose should have rigorous standards for acceptance. If the program is not reputable, you will find it difficult to be taken seriously in the competitive field of this industry. Make sure the program that you ultimately choose has the approval of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), the Sport Management Program Review Council (SMPRC), and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). These organizations ensure that all programs are both legitimate and concerned with students’ professional development.
